In 2006, the publication of Gomorrah sent shock waves around the world. For the first time in history, a literary work was going to change the world’s perception of the mafia. Yet, despite Gomorrah’s success and the phenomenal response to his work, twenty years on, Saviano’s admissions of powerlessness in the face of the vast Camorra machine can sometimes be scathing. The film retraces the genesis of a revolutionary book and the fate of a committed writer whose revelations have broken the silence surrounding organised crime, while questioning the power of literature in the face of deeply rooted mafia systems.
