1982, the Cold War – A 10 year-old American girl, Samantha Smith, writes a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov. She tries to convince him to stop the antagonism with her country. Celebrated from both sides, she offered a pacifist perspective, declared the Russians were “just like us” and became an ambassador of an unforeseen rapprochement between the two countries. Was she a rising peace ambassador who symbolized reconciliation or simply a pion of bigger diplomatic games?
